Online Couples Counselling

You keep having the same argument. Or you have stopped arguing and mostly gone quiet. I'm Lena Johansen, a couples counsellor, and I see couples online by video.

Most couples who get in touch have been trying to sort things out on their own for a long time. Couples counselling gives you a conversation where both of you are heard, with someone outside the relationship helping you see what happens between you.

What you can get help with

  • Arguments that follow the same track every time
  • Conversations that lock up or end in silence
  • Jealousy and lost trust
  • Distance and less closeness
  • Everyday stress spilling over into the relationship
  • Not knowing whether to stay together

How online couples counselling works

  1. The first session. You start straight away with a regular session. You each describe how you see the relationship, what made you look for help and what you want to be different. I ask questions and I do not take sides.
  2. Shared goals. From there we decide together what you want to work on.
  3. The sessions. We look at what happens between you when things lock up. You practise listening, and saying what you mean in a way the other person can take in.
  4. Between sessions. Sometimes you will have something to try at home before next time.

How many sessions you need varies. Some couples need a few, others continue for longer.

What to expect

Couples counselling is not a quick recipe, and I cannot promise a particular result. What I can promise is a conversation where neither of you is singled out and where you get help talking about what is hard.

The aim is for you to understand each other better and to be able to raise difficult things without getting stuck in the same track.

When couples counselling is not the right help

If there is violence, threats or an acute crisis, a different kind of support is needed. ActWise Therapy does not provide crisis support.

Common questions

Does couples counselling work?
Research shows that many couples are helped by couples counselling, but nobody can promise a particular result. What matters most is that you both want to try, and that you get help before the distance has grown too wide. Read more in Does couples counselling work?
Can I come to couples counselling alone?
Yes. If your partner does not want to take part, or cannot, you can book sessions by yourself and work on your side of the pattern. Read more in Can you go to couples counselling alone?
How many sessions does it usually take?
It varies. Some couples come a few times around one specific question, others continue for a longer period. We check along the way whether the sessions are giving you what you need.
Do we have to agree that the relationship should continue?
No. You can come even if you are unsure. The sessions can help you work out what you want, together or separately.
What about confidentiality?
Strict confidentiality applies. What you say in the sessions stays there.
